Project Summary – Resource Type Specific Margin
Genesis and Express editions only.
When using the Overall and Corporate margin fields in the Margin Calculation section of the Project Summary, you are calculating margin using the same percentage of all estimated costs regardless of resource type.
While this is common amongst most estimates, there are times that you want different Resource Types to generate different percentages of margin. For example, you may have a project where all standard labour costs in a project generate 15% margin, where specific materials that are very expensive may only attract a 2% margin.
The Margin Calculations section of the Project Summary allows you to apply a margin percentage on Direct and Overhead Costs at the Resource Type and Category level.
This is in addition to any Overall and Corporate margin specified for a project.
Project Summary – Resource Type Specific Margin
Clicking on either the On Direct Costs or On Overhead Costs hyperlink displays a grid showing the Resource Types in the project.
This grid shows the Total Category value of each Resource Type within either the Direct or Overhead Cost Schedules. Entering a percentage value in the % Margin field generates margin for the Total value of the Resource Type consumed within the specified Cost Schedule. The total margin applied to the project is displayed in the Applied Margin field.
Note: The values shown within the Resource Type Specific Margin fields do not include any cost or margin values generated by Resources with Sell Rates.
Margin can also be applied to the Resource Type Categories level. This occurs when a resource type is expanded, the next level of category subfolders is listed within the grid, with the values they each contribute to the project. If a percentage is applied at the Resource Type level, all subfolders use this percentage by default. This is indicated by the text in the % Margin field being grey and the same value.
The margin applied to any subcategories can be overridden by simply typing in the % Margin field. This causes the text to become black, and the margin is no longer linked to the resource type.
If a resource type has subcategories that include an overriding margin, an effective percentage, indicated by italicised text, will be displayed in the % Margin field. This cell also has the warning icon displayed, identifying that the value cannot be edited at that level because there are overrides in the Resource Type Categories.
Note: To improve the process of resetting all Resource Type Margin Values, an option to reset all current values to their default value of 0% can be found by right-clicking on any of the Resource Types in the list and selecting ‘Reset to Default’ from the context menu that appears.
